The TRIM notice, for Truth in Millage, is the statement every Florida property owner receives in August showing the property appraiser's value, the exemptions applied, the rates each taxing authority proposes, and what the tax bill will be if those rates are adopted. It is not a bill. It is the notice, and the only window to contest.
- Read it the week it arrives. It is a deadline dressed as an envelope, and the clock runs from the mailing, not from the day it is opened.
- Check three things: the assessed value, the exemptions applied, and whether last year's cap carried over correctly.
- The proposed rates on it are also a public-hearing calendar, which is where the millage is actually set.
- For a recent buyer it is the first look at the reset value, and the first chance to argue with it.
